On D-Day, 6 June 1944, the greatest battle of the Second World War began in Normandy, France. At 6.30 a.m. 156,000 men in more than 1,200 warships and more than 4,000 landing craft attacked the Normandy beaches. On this first day of the offensive, the loss of life was less than 3%. In one week, more than one million soldiers broke through the defenses of the Atlantic Wall commanded by German Marshal Rommel. In all, three million men landed in Normandy. The allies had secured air supremacy with 12,000 aircraft against only 169 German fighters. Operation Neptune opened a second front in more of the Russian front in Eastern Europe. Indeed, the invasion of Sicily by the Allied forces in July 1943 had proved slower than expected and did not affect the German army. Adolf Hitler was defeated in Normandy by the Allied forces which were commanded by the American General Dwight Eisenhower and the British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.
