On 10 July 1940, Hitler began the Battle of Britain because Prime Minister Winston Churchill had a fierce determination against the Third Reich. Hitler also lost the battle of Stalingrad on 2 February 1943. After the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, the German army retreated into France and Belgium. Millions of Germans were forced to flee as the Red Army advanced on the Eastern Front. On 30 April 1945, at about 3:30 p.m., Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin when the Red Army arrived. The Yalta agreements signed between the United States, Churchill and Stalin caused the partition of Germany, the loss of Poland, the Baltic States and of all the Eastern countries which joined the communist bloc under the influence of Stalin. Stalin was one of the victors of the Second World War with the United States, which became the leader of free countries.
