Winston Churchill published The River War

On 6 November 1899 Winston Churchill published The River War, an account of the Sudan campaign and the Battle of Omdurman in two volumes. After his electoral defeat (in the spring of 1999), Churchill became a war correspondent for the Morning Post during the Second Boer War which broke out on 12 October 1899 between Britain and the Boer republics in South Africa. Always seeking notoriety, he had some trying experiences. Following scouts to the front, he was taken prisoner and held in captivity near Pretoria. He then managed to escape and travel 480 km. This escape brought him fame in Britain by re-enlisting in the army and rescuing the British at Ladysmith and also those in the Pretoria prison camp. In June 1900, Winston Churchill returned to England after eight months of many strange and varied experiences as a journalist and later as an officer in the South African Light Horse.
