On 2 July 1881, James Garfield was assassinated at Washington Station. A supporter of his vice-president shot him several times in the body because he had not been chosen as consul in Paris. He died on 19 September 1881, of an infection caused by a bullet which could not be removed. He was the twentieth president of the United States elected for 1881. His term of office was one of shortest in US history, 6 months and 15 days. This tragic event took place during the Mercury-Mars period (from 3 May 1880 to 3 August 1881).
