On Sunday, December 7, 1941 (at 7:53 a.m. local time and 2:23 a.m. Washington time), the Japanese air force attacked the American base of Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian archipelago in the Pacific without a declaration of war. This attack was carried out by six Japanese aircraft carriers and more than 400 aircraft. It caused the death of 2,403 soldiers and civilians. A dozen American ships were sunk or damaged.
