On D-Day, 6 June 1944, the greatest battle of the Second World War began in Normandy, France. At 6.30 a.m. 156,000 men in more than 1,200 warships and more than 4,000 landing craft attacked the Normandy beaches. On this first day of the offensive, the loss of life was less than 3%. In one week, more than one million soldiers broke through the defenses of the Atlantic Wall commanded by German Marshal Rommel. In all, three million men landed in Normandy.
