On 2 April 1982 the Falklands War began. The Argentine military invaded two archipelagos in the South Atlantic, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, which belonged to the United Kingdom. The Falkland Islands had a population of about 1,800, mostly of European origin. South Georgia is inhabited by 400,000 king penguins, as many elephant seals and a few scientists.
