Winston Churchill was appointed Prime Minister by King George VI on 10 May 1940 at 6.30 pm. That morning, Adolf Hiter had ordered the invasion of France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands ending the phoney war, the first eight months of which saw no offensive against France. This appointment was the consequence of the disavowal of the outgoing Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, by Labour and the Liberals following his hesitations.
