On 6 November 1899 Winston Churchill published The River War, an account of the Sudan campaign and the Battle of Omdurman in two volumes. After his electoral defeat (in the spring of 1999), Churchill became a war correspondent for the Morning Post during the Second Boer War which broke out on 12 October 1899 between Britain and the Boer republics in South Africa.
