Édith Piaf’s last years were pathetic. She compensated for the physical suffering, due to several automobile accidents, the disease and several surgical operations, by morphine and alcohol which corroded her, revealing even more its physical brittleness which contrasted so much with her clear and powerful voice. She sang successfully in New York until she collapsed on stage in 1959.
