Winston Churchill lost his seat as a Member of Parliament in the elections on 15 November 1922. His wife Clementine had to represent him during the election campaign because he became seriously ill and had an appendectomy. The Liberal Party he supported split between two leaders. He traveled for his convalescence on the French Riviera where he indulged in his hobby of painting. He lost again in the Leicester election on 6 December 1923.
