After his first election victory as a Member of Parliament Churchill sat with the Conservative party in Parliament. From 1903, the Conservatives decided to support protectionism to promote domestic trade. In March 1904, Churchill made a speech in favor of free trade, which led to a break with his party. He left it at the end of 1904 to support the Liberal Party program. It was this party that won the December 1905 election. The Liberal Party leader became Prime Minister and appointed Churchill as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies to monitor the situation in South Africa after the war. ...
