Winston Churchill was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1900 and sat in parliament with the Conservatives. After his first electoral defeat in the spring 1899, he bounced back as a war correspondent during the Second Boer War, which had broken out in South Africa on 12 October 1898. Taken prisoner, he managed to escape and then re-enlisted as an officer in the British army.
