On 2 July 1934, the President of the Weimar Republic Hindenburg congratulated Hitler for having eliminated several hundred of his SA militia supporters during the Night of the Long Knives on 30 June. Hindenburg’s death on 2 August allowed him to temporarily assume the dual functions of Chancellor and President as provided for in the constitution. The same day the Reichstag deputies passed a law merging the two offices. Hitler was made Chancellor and Fuhrer for good in the plebiscite on 19 August 1934, which he won with a 90% majority. After full powers, he obtained absolute power without even abolishing the constitution of the Weimar Republic.
