Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad near Agra, India, about 200 km southeast of New Delhi. She fought for India’s independence alongside her father Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1947. As a teenager, she organized the youth movement of her party. In this way she forged of unbreakable relationships with those who would become her party’s future cadres and MPs. She became president of her party’s election commission and then information minister in 1964 after her father’s death. Indira Gandhi was elected Prime Minister of India on 19 January 1966. In all, she was elected four times as Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1984. She was assassinated in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards in revenge for the Indian army’s violation of their sacred sanctuary, the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
