On 27 April 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected President of the Republic of South Africa in the first multiracial elections. After 27 years in prison, he became the first colored president in his country after being the leader of the ANC. His party had decided the armed struggle against the apartheid laws put in place by the National Party government.
