On 19 May 1945, the Labour Party left the government, ending the wartime period of national unity. New elections were held on 5 July. The surprising result was that the Labour Party won for the first time since its foundation. After leading his country to total victory, Winston Churchill was forced to resign. His failure was a direct consequence of that victory. He was not a party man. His political influence was exerted through the middle classes and among the youth. Some of them were weary of hardship and others had sacrificed themselves in battle. Public opinion was no longer in favor of his energetic speeches.
